Sandsfoot Castle

Sandsfoot Castle, located in Weymouth, Dorset, is a historic artillery fort built by Henry VIII in 1539-1540 as part of his coastal defence strategy against potential invasions from France and Spain. The castle, perched on a cliff overlooking Portland Harbour, was strategically positioned to defend the southern coastline and the important naval base at Portland.

Gardens and Surroundings

The castle is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens, known as the Sandsfoot Gardens, which add to the charm of the site. These gardens provide a peaceful setting for visitors to relax and enjoy the picturesque coastal views. The proximity to the Rodwell Trail, a popular walking and cycling path, makes Sandsfoot Castle a perfect stop for those exploring the scenic routes along the Weymouth coastline.
