Portland Bill

Portland Bill is a rugged and picturesque headland located on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, on the southern coast of England. Known for its striking cliffs and dramatic coastal scenery, it is a beloved destination for both tourists and locals seeking natural beauty and maritime history.

The Lighthouse

One of the most iconic features of Portland Bill is the Portland Bill Lighthouse. This distinctive red and white striped lighthouse, built in 1906, stands 41 meters tall and serves as a crucial navigational aid, warning ships of the treacherous coastline and the notorious Portland Race – a powerful tidal surge that can be perilous for sailors. The lighthouse, still operational today, is also open to visitors who can climb to the top for breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline and the English Channel.

The Pulpit Rock

Another notable landmark is the Pulpit Rock, a striking geological formation created during quarrying operations in the 19th century. This large, isolated rock stands at the edge of the cliffs and is a popular spot for visitors to take photographs and enjoy the panoramic views. It resembles an open bible leaning on a pulpit, giving it its name.
