I visited Bohus Fortress for Midsommar, and despite it being just a 20-minute drive from Gothenburg's centre and my well-documented love of castles, this was my first visit. The fortress stands proudly atop a hill, surrounded by the Göta River, which forms a natural moat around its base. Its imposing position has historically held off many armies, and standing there, it's easy to see why.

As you'd expect for Midsommar, the celebrations were in full swing with singing and dancing around the maypole. A walking path encircles the fortress, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the river below. The traditional castle atmosphere was enhanced by food and drink stalls reminiscent of a lively medieval market, complete with period games. There were activities like archery and kids' jousting, making it a festive and engaging experience for visitors of all ages.
