Ragnhildsholmen

Ragnhildsholmen, an island in the Göta River near Kungälv, Sweden, is a site steeped in medieval history and Viking lore. Historically, it was the location of a formidable fortification and a central hub of royal authority in the region. The fort, built by King Haakon IV of Norway in the mid-13th century, played a crucial role in his expansionist policies and was one of Norway's most important strongholds in southern Bohuslän. The strategic placement of the castle on Ragnhildsholmen allowed it to control the surrounding area and safeguard the Norwegian kingdom from Swedish incursions.

I visited Ragnhildsholmen during Midsommar, drawn by its rich history and the traditional celebrations. The island and its fortress, now in ruins, offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. Walking around the site, I could easily imagine the bustling activity that once took place here, from Viking-era settlements to medieval military preparations. The Midsommar festivities added to the experience, with singing and dancing around the maypole, reminiscent of the community gatherings that have taken place here for centuries. The scenic views of the Göta River and the surrounding landscape were stunning, making the visit both a historical journey and a picturesque retreat.

The archaeological excavations at Ragnhildsholmen have revealed significant findings, including remnants of the fort and evidence of a royal estate dating back to the Viking Age. These discoveries have deepened our understanding of the site's importance and its role in the region's history. Exploring Ragnhildsholmen provides a unique opportunity to connect with the ancient and medieval past of Sweden, offering a tangible link to the stories and legends that have shaped the area.

Bohus fästning

I visited Bohus Fortress for Midsommar, and despite it being just a 20-minute drive from Gothenburg's centre and my well-documented love of castles, this was my first visit. The fortress stands proudly atop a hill, surrounded by the Göta River, which forms a natural moat around its base. Its imposing position has historically held off many armies, and standing there, it's easy to see why.

As you'd expect for Midsommar, the celebrations were in full swing with singing and dancing around the maypole. A walking path encircles the fortress, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the river below. The traditional castle atmosphere was enhanced by food and drink stalls reminiscent of a lively medieval market, complete with period games. There were activities like archery and kids' jousting, making it a festive and engaging experience for visitors of all ages.
