The Dark Hedges

A disappointing avenue of beech trees, which has become a popular tourist spot due to its inclusion in Game of Thrones. The avenue dates back to about 1775, when James Stuart built a new house, named Gracehill House and planted the avenue leading up to it. Both the avenue and house remain as well as a small cafe serving visitors.

Prior to its prominence, it was still a moderately popular place to visit as the avenue was said to be haunted by the Grey Lady. The True Identity of the Grey Lady is unknown. Partly because it is attributed to James Stewarts’ daughter, a maid, or an unnamed member of the graveyard, and partly due to ghosts being fictional.

There are a great many country lanes in the United Kingdom which have a more complete and arching series of interwoven trees, but the close location of this avenue and the excellent parking afforded by the nearby manor house makes it an easier choice for filming for shows like Game of Thrones or films like Transformers.
