Abisko Östra is a small village located in the northern part of Sweden, approximately 100 km west of the city of Kiruna. The village is situated in the midst of the stunning Abisko National Park, which is known for its dramatic landscape, including soaring mountains, deep valleys, and pristine lakes.

Museums & Galleries

Naturum Abisko

Part museum, part guide centre and part ecology project, the Naturum was closed for visitors on my arrival due to the pandemic but was offering guided tours through nature. Worth taking them up to learn more about the area.

Parks & Gardens

Abisko National Park

Formed the same year as Sweden's first laws on nature conservation, Abisko National Park is a large expanse of protected wilderness, through which the King's Trail runs. Local flora and fauna thrive though the low-level permafrost is melting due to climate change.

Restaurants & Bars

STF Abisko Mountain Station

Bordering somewhere between hostel and hotel, the Abisko Mountain station offers ensuite rooms, one of the most fully stocked shops on the trail and a genuinely excellent restaurant. Dinner needed pre-booking due to Corona, but they could accommodate me with a late sitting despite only calling that afternoon. The breakfast is great, fresh baked warm loaves of bread, coffees and locally sourced cheese and meats.

The shop in the station sells various food options for the trail with a wide choice from dried meats and cheeses to pre-packaged meals. Its also has perhaps the largest range of camping equipment to buy of any point on the trail and clothes, underwear, gloves and tools. There is also a range of souvenirs.

Sports & Activities

Kungsleden

The start of the 443-kilometre hike of the King's Trail, Abisko offers all the services you need to fill any last-minute requirements for the hike. The trail starts a short distance from the train station and is marked by a carved obelisk.

Alternative Hikes

Many hikes run from Abisko to explore. Once simple one runs down to the huge lake and offers lovely views across into Norway.

Northern Lights

During winter months, tours and the Abisko Sky Station offer incredible options to view the Northern Lights.
