Copenhagen

I went to Copenhagen for a long weekend with a friend, we got there Friday evening late, and after checking in, we walked past a strip club, sex shop and a series of prostitutes to get to an all night kebab joint for a very late dinner.

Sights & Culture

Rundetårn

One the the most famous landmarks in Copenhagen is the round tower, with a museum at the top of the spiral ramp.

From the top, you have great views across the city.

Nyhavn

The Nyhaven, or New Port has some of the most iconic images of Copenhagen, the multicoloured houses along the waterfront as well as a number of excellent restaurants.

Freetown Christiania

Freetown Cristiana is based in an old military base, that was taken over forty years ago or so by a hippy commune. Building homes, work places, growing their own weed and creating music and artistic venues, it has always been an idealistic place, somewhat outside of the law.

This has, recently attracted the attention of gangs who have taken over the drug trade in Cristiana, turning it into something darker and more dangerous. A man was shot the day before we went in. Outside, signs asking you to bring your own drugs rather than buy them can be seen.

That aside, it's a fun place, the art is off the wall, the outdoor cafes serve their own home brew and the atmosphere is relaxed.

Christiansborg Palace

The seat of government for Copenhagen is the Christiansborg Palace, an impressive structure, though blocky.

Kastellet

Incredibly visible from the air is the Kastellet, built on a star shaped island surrounded by a moat, when seen on a map it looks more like a map from a video game than something realistic.

Den Lille Havfrue at Langelinie

Another famous landmark, and one the people are always surprised by its diminutive size is the Little Mermaid statue in Langelinie.

Rosenborg Castle

Rosenborg Castle is set in lovely grounds and inside has a number of cultural treasures of Denmark.

Museums & Galleries

SMK – Statens Museum for Kunst

The huge State Museum of Art has exhibitions starting even outside with chairs in the lake outside.

Restaurants & Bars

Street Food Market at Christianshavn

For really great food, head over to Christianshaven to the street food market. Primarily indoors, it offers a wide range of foods and drinks, and if you had time, it might be worth trying them all.
